The dawn of the twentieth century.
It is a new eras - but women are still fighting for their rights and independence.
But, after her father’s untimely death, Emma Fairley, a beautiful and talented redhead, is determined to maintain the ideals and integrity of the newspaper he owned, the Charbrook Echo.
She finds herself struggling to get her voice heard, especially when a small newspaper like hers becomes easy prey for the rapacious newspaper tycoon, Jonathan Bradley.
She is swept into his world when she marries his strikingly handsome son, Arthur. It was a simple marriage of convenience, and though Emma knew it was without love she still thought they could build a rewarding friendship.
However, it soon takes a nightmarish turn and Emma realizes she is trapped in a life she cannot bear.
When the fiery, poetic Welshman Evan Lloyd becomes the new editor of the Echo Emma feels the first stirring of a passionate love.
Will they be able to be together?
Or will their relationship be just 'An Inconvenient Affair'?
'A brilliantly told tale of love, business and politics.' - Holly Kinsella, best-selling author of 'Uptown Girl'.

When Emma's father dies, she is determined to do whatever it takes to save the newspaper her father owned. The small town's newspaper meant everything to him, and thus it means everything to Emma, too. Meanwhile, Arthur Bradley, son of the rich tycoon determined to overthrow Emma's newspaper, is intrigued by Emma's beauty and fire. He decides that he wants to "posses her" as one would possess a gem. He wants to marry her for show only. He does not love her. Emma does not love Arthur either, but when he proposes she accepts without hesitation because she is so eager to save her newspaper. While Emma expects it to be a marriage of at least friendship, she finds Arthur to be a cruel man. He doesn't care for her, doesn't even want to sleep with her, just wants her there as his prize. When Evan walks into her life, she finds herself drawn to him. But can they be together?I was very disappointed with Emma's character. I understood her feelings for the paper, but what woman would marry a near stranger, a man she didn't love and didn't know anything about, just to save a newspaper. I could understand if she was trying to save herself from destitution, trying to avoiding selling her body, trying to protect family, etc. But she wasn't starving. She had other assets. A newspaper just isn't worth it. Perhaps if she had courted Arthur for a while and got to know him better before "jumping the gun" so to speak, she would have realized he was a jerk and wouldn't have married him. So I had no sympathy for Emma. And Arthur's character just creeped me out.
This is third novel I have read by Mary Williams. All three's heroines and heroes have disappointed me. Their moral integrity, and plain common sense, leaves much to be desired. Mary Williams is an excellent writer- I just can't stand her characters. I wish she would use her talent to write about nice people.
