Hippocrates Is Not Dead An Anthology of Hippocratic Readings Patrick Guinan MD 9781456735463 Books
In this brief (91 pages) collection of eight essays elucidating the Hippocratic tradition of medical ethics, author and editor Patrick Guinan, a urologist at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, has rendered an exceptional service to his profession as well as to every reader of this exceptionally readable text. The central and controlling concept of this text is Hippocrates' conception that the practice of medicine involves a three dimensional covenant: a covenant of trust between a doctor and a vulnerable patient; a covenant of competence between a doctor and his profession; and a sacred covenant between a doctor and God however understood.
For all of these authors, the practice of medicine is a practical art, not a science, an art rendered in behalf of a particular patient with all his or her particularities, and an art that operates in support of, rather than in violation of human nature. The central activity of this art is "a healing action" taken in behalf of a vulnerable human being. As such, like Hippocrates himself, as evidenced in the Oath for which he is renowned, any action that is not a healing activity, such as abortion or euthanasia, lies outside of and in violation of the practice of medicine properly understood.
For Guinan and his colleagues, the practice of medicine is inherently a moral activity in which the commitment to competence is both lifelong and pervasive.
I recommend this refreshing text to everyone, lay or professional, who is interested in the moral foundations of modern medicine. It could not be more timely or relevant to the issues we face today
